The Seattle Mariners baseball star Adam Kennedy was arrested on suspicion of DUI this past January in Newport Beach after getting pulled over on the 73 freeway, but his case seems to be moving along slowly in court. USA Today reported that the Orange County District Attorney’s Office just charged Kennedy last week with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence and a misdemeanor count of driving with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit.
Kennedy, who used to play for the Anaheim Angels, was released from jail several hours after his arrest on January 26. The athlete now has his arraignment scheduled for June 21.
The Orange County Register reports that Kennedy can face a sentence of up to six months in prison if he is convicted of the two misdemeanor charges. However, first-time DUI offenders will usually not have to spend more than a day in jail and they will instead just be sentenced to several years of probation.
If an offender violates the terms of his or her probation, he or she can face severe penalties. Penalties for probation violation include significant fines and jail time. Besides probation, DUI offenders in California will usually face penalties of fines, community service, and alcohol education classes.
Adam Kennedy said in a statement after his arrest that he was ashamed of the drunk driving incident and that it is not typical of his character. In the Orange County Register, he was quoted saying “It’s my first legal trouble, something I’m definitely not looking to ever do again.”
