There are some cell phone apps that warn drivers of where DUI checkpoints are in the local area, but these apps might not exist for too much longer. According to Time's Techland Blog, four U.S. senators are trying to get Apple, Google, and Research in Motion to stop selling these types of apps because they say that these programs encourage drunk driving.

Checkpointer by Ace Baron and Fuzz Alert Pro by Fuzz Alert are just a couple of applications that are known for posting information about DUI checkpoints in Los Angeles and metro areas across the country, including the location of such roadblocks. DUI lawyers argue, however, that these smartphone apps do not encourage drunk driving and that they even promote traffic safety by informing drivers that they shouldn't get behind the wheel while impaired. Just because an app lets drivers become aware of a DUI checkpoint location, doesn't mean that buzzed driving is encouraged.

Just because an app lets drivers become aware of a DUI checkpoint location, doesn’t mean that buzzed driving is encouraged.

So should our federal government control the app market? If drivers want to avoid a DUI checkpoint, they can easily learn of sobriety checkpoints through other sources. In the Los Angeles area, local police departments often post information on their website of where checkpoints will be. Internet users will sometimes post on their Twitter or Facebook account if they see a checkpoint in their area. We even publish Los Angeles DUI checkpoint locations on this blog.

CNN recently reported that BlackBerry maker Research in Motion has already agreed to pull smartphone apps that help users avoid DUI checkpoints. We’ll see if Apple and Google follow in RIM’s footsteps.

Changing Google G1 keyboard layout to qwerty (US) to qwertz (UK)

android developers 150x150 Changing Google G1 keyboard layout to qwerty (US) to qwertz (UK)

Next issue after updating my T-Mobile UK phone. Most ROMs are available for mainly US keyboard layout ( qwerty ), but unluckily my keyboard layout is UK ( qwertz )  – after updating, it started working funny. Whenever I am typing Z, it was printing Y and vice -versa . So, I started to check /system folder for the solution. The file with keyboard character type placed under /system/user/keychars/ and the name of the file is trout-keypad-v3.kcm.bin . So, searched and found that keyboard layout and then replaced the present file of USqwerty keypad with it to make it qwertz layout. Bydefault, /system folder is read-only. So, follow the procedure written below, before that copy keyboard layout file after downloading it from following URL

http://kewlshare.com/dl/33e5be5db589/UKkeypad.zip.html

1) Power of the mobile.

2) If you followed my previous post for rooting G1, you already have cyanogen recovery installed on your phone. So, press Home + Power to start your phone  in recovery mode.

3) Choose last option, “Go to Console”

4) type following

mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

cd /system/usr/keychars/

dd if=/sdcard/trout-keypad-v3.kcm.bin of=trout-keypad-v3.kcm.bin

reboot

And voila … you are done icon smile Changing Google G1 keyboard layout to qwerty (US) to qwertz (UK) keypad will work as it was before rooting/putting US roms in it.

More laterz buddies.

Next time will be with step-by-step tutorial to making partitions on your MicroSD card including swap, which is suggested by most ROMs for Google G1.

Avoiding a DUI on St. Patrick's Day

The Los Angeles DUI Law Blog Avoiding a DUI on St. Patrick's Day By Laura Fishman on March 17, 2011 9:02 AM | No TrackBacks

California Highway Patrol officers are planning to enforce drunk driving offenses on St. Patrick's Day, but this won't stop people from partying on everybody's favorite Irish holiday. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), 52 percent of adults say that they will be celebrating St. Patrick's Day this year, which is up from the 45.2 percent of adults who said that they would celebrate the holiday in 2010.

How will people be spending their St. Patrick's Day this year? Most people say that they'll be wearing the color green. NRF found that 19.1 percent of Americans will be attending a private party on March 17 and that another 31.2 percent of adults will be attending a party in a bar or restaurant.

Yet before people start with the pints of Guinness and or shots of Bailey's Irish Cream Liqueur, it's important to designate a sober driver. Not even luck from a leprechaun would be able to stop a person from facing severe legal penalties after a DUI conviction.

In the state of California, a person convicted of a DUI for the first time can be punished with imprisonment, probation, fines, community service, license suspension and attendance at alcohol education classes. A DUI conviction can also stay on your criminal record and show up on background checks when you're trying to get a job.

Hence, it's a good idea to play it safe on Thursday and avoid getting behind the wheel while impaired. Save some money for a taxi cab home when you're going out for drinks. And don't forget to wear your green.

Danae Miller Arrested For DUI After 15 Traffic Citations

The Los Angeles DUI Law Blog Danae Miller Arrested For DUI After 15 Traffic Citations By Laura Fishman on February 28, 2011 12:24 PM | No TrackBacks

Danae Miller has been accused of killing a bicyclist while she was driving under the influence in Newport Beach, but some California residents are wondering why this 22-year-old woman was able to drive with a valid license in the first place. According to The Daily Pilot, Miller has received 15 different citations for various traffic violations since 2005.

The bulk of Miller's traffic citations were reportedly in her first year of driving. Now at age 22, Miller can face serious criminal charges that include DUI and vehicular manslaughter. The fatal accident took place last week on San Joaquin Hills Road near Spyglass Road.

In California, a driver's license can be suspended if drivers accumulate four points on their record in 12 months, six points in 24 months or eight points in 36 months. A person is eligible to attend traffic school for certain violations once every 18 months, which can remove points from a driver's record.

Between July 2005 and January 2008, Miller was convicted of eight traffic violations that each counted as one point on her driving record. DMV officials stated that because this particular driver attended traffic school, certain points did not count against her. Hence, she was able to keep her driver's license. After 2008, the time between Miller's tickets never added up to enough points for a license suspension.

If Danae Miller is convicted of DUI or vehicular manslaughter, she may finally be forced to get off of the road for a designated period of time. However, she still needs to be represented by an attorney so that she can receive proper defense in the case. Consequences for a DUI, even one that is not as serious as this, can be long-lasting and effect insurance rates and even a future job hunt due to negative information on a background check.

Formatting your microSD card and make partitions including Swap

WARNING!!! this will reformat you entire microSD card!! So, take backup before proceeding with the steps.

You can use the recovery console by pressing Home + Power when powering up your G1.

If you have “Terminal Emulator” installed , you can also use that. We will make 32 MB swap here in these tutorial.

Example for 8GB card (this example plays it safe and will leave a small amount leftover regardless of the 8GB card)

Reboot and enter recovery
Enter console
#parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
#print (to verfiy we know what size card we are dealing with, the details should be straight forward)
rm 1
rm 2
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 7200
mkpartfs primary ext2 7200 7700
mkpartfs primary linux-swap 7700 7732

#print (to verify we have the 3 partitions)

Example for my 4GB card

#parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
#print (to verfiy we know what size card we are dealing with, the details should be straight forward)
rm 1
rm 2
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 3420
mkpartfs primary ext2 3420 3932
mkpartfs primary linux-swap 3932-3964

Example for a 2GB card playing it safe
#parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
#print (to verfiy we know what size card we are dealing with, the details should be straight forward)
rm 1
rm 2
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 1200
mkpartfs primary ext2 1200 1700
mkpartfs primary linux-swap 1700-1732

“End?” you need to place the last value for the linux swap eg.3964 for my 4GB card

#print (to verify we have the 3 partitions)

Next we need to “quit” parted and upgrade our ext2 partition to ext3

#upgrade_fs

Swap value is set to 30 currently, you can change this by modifying the “echo” value for swappiness using swapper application available in the Market for free.

Soon will publish more on G1. icon smile Formatting your microSD card and make partitions including Swap Hold tight till then…..
