Finally bought my next android cell – Motorola Charm

After using my Google G1 ( HTC Dream ) for last one year, and got addicted with Android, changed my mobile phone yesterday atlast. Did a lot and lot of research before buying the new one. So, sharing it with you, may be you will find helpful.

I am using Smartphone from last 5-6 years and made decision after every single phone to find out the best match for my everyday usage. Presently my criteria to buy a smartphone are,

1) Touchscreen ( So easy to use and scroll on those tiny devices )
2) Android ( yaaa.. I love the power to modify it in my way, and alot of Apps )
3) qwerty keypad ( I am a heavy text/email user. It is tough to use touchscreen to type using virtual keypad. Also, I am a resident of Kolkata, India – which is a hot city. So, when I am out of office or car, moisture/sweat commonly all over the screen, and touch screen don’t work good with that. )
4) A good / fast processor
5) Good amount of RAM/Internal memory. ( This is what mainly increase the speed / performance of a cell, even more than a good processor )
6) Avg. Camera. ( HTC camera is always bad )
7) Decent sound ( Not clanky )

9) smaller size / less weight ( Google G1 was 158 gram )
10) Thinner
11) Good battery life ( Somehow android phones by default don’t have a good battery life )
12) HSUPA/3G/Edge

With all those criterias in mind – I found only 3 phones matching all those.

1) Sony Ericssion X10 mini pro
2) Motorola Charm – MB502
3) Motorola Flipout – ME511

When started researching with all those models, X10 mini pro was my 1st preference for the look. It is gorgeous.

Also, a lot of patches are available , so many new flashable ROMs too. Display is great. Camera and Sound is better than any other models. Matching with almost all my criterias. But, only bad thing is battery life. It is terrible as per many reviews. I faced a lot of issues for same with my Google G1. I am a heavy internet user from my mobile too, and even if Google G1 is a great phone – this was a big disadvantage of it, and I know the pain. So, started to look for other 2 options to compare.

Found – Motorola Charm and Motorola Flipout is almost same configuration hardware wise. But, only body designs are different.

Motorola Flipout Tech Specs

With a stunning 720 Mhz processor, 1130 mAh battery – the main thing amazed me is RAM and ROM size of the device. It is huge for any Android phone ( 512 MB ) whereas Sony ericssion is having only 128 MB RAM. My previous Google G1 RAM was only 192 MB. So, made my choice between Sony and motorola instantly. Only bad thing of those 2 sets of Motorla is Display. A 256k display unit which looks bad than even G1. But tolerable for a phone. As I will use it for calls, internet and listening music purpose only.

Now, needed to decide between Moto Flipout and Moto Charm. Found an amazing INR. 3,000/- difference in price. Motorola Charm is cheaper than Flipout even if the hardware is same almost. Also, a friend suggested, Flipout design is very feminine even if I liked shiney backcover of Motorola Flipout. So, yep, ended up buying a Motorola Charm at last icon smile Finally bought my next android cell Motorola Charm . Price: INR 13,300/- including TAX. The cheapest one of my all cell serize – but the fastest one ever !!! Already started modifying it to make it more faster and charming, as I didn’t like motoblur softare of motorola.
